These rare and stunning Victorian cotton bloomers are truly a standout piece from the era. Featuring intricate lace embellishments throughout, they showcase the craftsmanship and attention to detail that make antique fashion so captivating. These bloomers are not only a beautiful example of Victorian undergarments, but their unique design makes them versatile for modern styling as well.

Whether worn as a cool cover-up at the beach, styled with a modern twist, or used in a theatre or film production, these bloomers are clean, ready to wear, and perfect for a variety of creative uses. They also make an exceptional display piece for vintage collectors.

What Are Bloomers?

Design: Bloomers are typically made from soft, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. They have an elastic or drawstring waistband and are gathered at the knee or lower calf with a band or lace. The hem often features decorative elements like lace or embroidery.

Historical Context: Named after Amelia Bloomer, a 19th-century women’s rights advocate who promoted them as part of a reform dress that included a full-length dress worn over the bloomers. They were initially introduced as a more comfortable alternative to traditional petticoats and crinolines.

How Were They Worn?

Under Garments: Bloomers were typically worn as undergarments beneath long skirts or dresses. They provided modesty and protection, and their loose fit allowed for greater movement compared to more restrictive clothing of the era.

Fashion Reform: In the mid-19th century, bloomers became associated with the women's suffrage movement and the broader reform dress movement, which aimed to make women’s clothing more practical and comfortable.

Everyday Use: For women, especially in the Victorian era, wearing bloomers was often a practical choice for everyday activities and as a foundation garment beneath their outerwear.

Today, bloomers are appreciated as historical garments and are sometimes incorporated into modern outfits for a cool touch.

 Please Note :
Any accessories used in the picture are not included, there are there to show how the outfit could be worn or a decorative object. I need to be honest. I sell Vintage and Antique Clothing and I would say anything before 30s should be treated with care and worn with care. Mostly these items will be fragile especially 20s silk or Edwardian very fine Muslin.  Some can not handle stress and will tear easily. Should be bought a size bigger where possible or should be a little loose on.
Thanks for visiting.
