Late Edwardian Lace Bralette, c. 1915–1923
This rare antique bralette dates to the late Edwardian to early 1920s period, a moment of transition in women’s undergarments when rigid corsetry began to soften and early bandeau-style brassieres emerged.
Crafted entirely in fine net lace with applied floral motifs, this piece features a straight, unstructured silhouette designed to sit lightly against the body. Prior to the introduction of molded cups and elasticized support, such garments were worn layered over a chemise or beneath sheer dresses, often in combination with corsets or girdles.
Time has left its gentle mark. Several age-related pinholes were present, consistent with the fragility of early lace. These areas have been sensitively restored using period-appropriate antique lace appliqués, carefully integrated to preserve the integrity and spirit of the original garment. The straps have been replaced to improve wearability, a common and accepted practice for antique lingerie intended for modern use.
A romantic survivor of early 20th-century lingerie history, this bralette is best suited for careful wear, collection, or display, and offers a rare glimpse into the intimate craftsmanship of the Edwardian era.
